A bit of history
This old historic chalet built at the dawn of the 18th century by the Thomas (and not the Tanner) is linked to a page in the discovery of western alpine flora. It was under the roof of the original chalet that, around 1760, Abraham Thomas (1740-1824) and Albert de Haller (1707-1777) developed a friendship and a shared passion for medicinal alpine flora. Albert de Haller was a complete savant, a poet, doctor, philosopher and director of the Bex saltworks. Haller had appreciated the Thomas, father and son, considering them to be extremely valuable collaborators. They travelled through the Valais, Graubünden and even the Italian Alps in search of medicinal plants. This chalet was the meeting place for many European botanical scientists of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Then between 1870 and 1930, it became the property of the TANNER family, who ran the chalet as a hotel and boarding house; they built the two side buildings to the original chalet as well as an imposing 5-storey hotel opposite the chalet, "L'hôtel Tanner", which was demolished in 1980. The chalet changed hands in 1960 and became part of the Reymond family. It will be their summer and later winter residence. The chalet has never stopped hosting creative, intellectual guests, lovers of history and tradition. They have each in their own way left their mark on this historic residence.
Tribute and gratitude to the many families who, over the generations, have loved this chalet, worked to maintain it and have been able to preserve its soul: Thomas, Girod, Ravy, Moreillon, Tanner, Rod, Lambert, Tisch, Addor and Reymond.
After 300 years, we have only one wish: with God's protection, may this witness to the past remain forever a cradle of intellectual curiosity and sharing, imbued with a spirit of tolerance, friendship and joy.
